ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
GEORGE HOWE COLT is the bestselling author of The Big House, which was a National Book Award finalist and a New York Times Notable Book of the Year; Brothers; November of the Soul; and The Game. He lives in Western Massachusetts with his wife, the writer Anne Fadiman.
ANNE FADIMAN’s most recent book, The Wine Lover’s Daughter, is a memoir about her father, wine, and the upsides and downsides of upward mobility. It was an NPR and Library Journal Best Book of the Year, received the Readable Feast Award for Memoir & Food Writing, and was one of The Guardian’s Top 10 Culinary Memoirs of all time. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, her account of the cross cultural conflicts between a Hmong family and the American medical system, won a National Book Critics Circle Award, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, a Boston Book Review Prize, and a Salon Book Award. She has also written two essay collections, Ex Libris (a book about books—buying them, writing in their margins, and arguing with her husband on how to shelve them) and At Large and At Small (on Coleridge, postal history, and ice cream, among other topics).
Fadiman is the only writer to have won National Magazine Awards for both reporting (on elderly suicide) and essays (on the multiple and often contradictory meanings of the American flag). The former editor of The American Scholar and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she is the Francis Writer-in-Residence at Yale, which has awarded her the Richard H. Brodhead Prize for Teaching Excellence. She is married to the writer George Howe Colt.
